I was vegan for three years, vegetarian for three more before that, and now I eat everything. Well, most things.
What kind of vegan? People always ask. Just how vegan was I? Everyone finds their own boundaries. I ate no meat, eggs, dairy, or gelatin, period. I never really cheated. I did eat refined sugar and honey, which I know some people consider animal byproducts. I suppose they are, but then again, I didn't become a vegan as an animal rights statement, or for religious beliefs. I stopped eating animal products because I didn't like the way they made me feel. I have a more elaborate explanation than that, but the one I just gave will suffice. In the summer of 2000, after months of craving meat (by then I was anemic), I ate a steak. That was the end of vegan for me. I figured that since I began the whole thing as a response to what my body felt was right, it served as decent reasoning to return to omnivorism. In the end, I seem to go with what my belly feels it needs, or needs to avoid. I still don't consume much dairy, and drink soy milk instead of real milk. People ask if I'll ever go back to veganism. I doubt it, though I've learned not to say "never" about anything, instead evaluating each decision as it needs to be made. And respecting chocolate, always. |
